Like an epidural steroid injection, a facet joint injection administers corticosteroid and anesthetic to the vertebral facet joints. The joints at the back of the spine where the vertebral bones meet are called facet joints. The spine possesses many of these joints, providing the spine with flexibility in all planes of movement. Like other joints within the body, these small joints may become irritated and inflamed. A facet joint injection may provide immediate pain relief that lasts from weeks to a year. Decreased pain allows clients to resume regular daily activities and participate in a physical therapy program.
