Discography is a diagnostic procedure that may assist a spine surgeon in planning the most therapeutic surgical procedure. Also known as a discogram, discography may be ordered in patients with low back and leg pain for whom conservative treatment has brought little relief. While magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) shows the appearance of the spine and discs, it does not always correlate with the pain-generating problem. Discography helps surgeons pinpoint the exact cause of low back pain.
